Lemon, or Citrus limon, has a long, exotic history as an oriental fruit, an ancient delicacy, a rarity of the wealthy in Medieval times, and now, a simple fruit of refreshment. First cultivated in India and surrounding areas, then migrated to the near East, and on eventually into Europe, lemons have been prized by homeowners and consumers for a variety of uses, both culinary and healthful.

Originally brought to the Americas as seeds by Columbus, lemons are grown now throughout the Western Hemisphere, mostly the warmer climates. Once a wildly-expensive treat in ancient times, now lemons are found in every grocery store–lemonade and lemon slices in iced tea are considered standard Americana refreshment. (more…)

Everyone has experienced this at one point or another. The morning after a big dinner party, or just a big dinner, you wake up to a massive pile of dishes in the sink. Winter is almost upon us so it’s time to make some final preparation to your patio and decking before the frost sets in and there are a lot of good reasons for you to do this. Home maintenance not only keeps your garden and surrounding area looking nice but it also helps to prevent any future repairs, or at least prevent them.

Since hard water contains minerals which stick on substances, lack of frequent cleaning leads to stains. Stains are much harder to remove especially when left there for a long time. Vinegar, lemons and Calgon can be used to remove hard water glass stains. Glass doors, especially shower doors get hard water stains from the water we use and the best solution would probably be to soften the water we use. But once the damage has been done, we now have the option of looking for ways and means to remove the stains. To remove hard water stains from glass, we have to first determine how long the stains have been there and how hard the water is.

Once, I left a window to be cleaned for over a month. It was made with clear antique glass, so all imperfections showed up and the flux that had sat on the panel left the glass looking cloudy after a normal cleaning. I was really worried because I had done this to several windows and faced having to build them all again from scratch. Flux should be cleaned off of a window as soon as possible to avoid this problem.
