We are all proud of our belongings, and when some dirt or a stain appears on our microfiber couches we are not best pleased. Naturally we want to try and get it clean again so it’s just as it was when we bought it. But microfiber is a special material, so in order to make sure that we don’t do any damage when we carry out the clean, we need to follow the cleaning code carefully.

The cleaning codes for the majority of microfiber couches comprise of 3 possible options. Some will have the single letter “W” on the label. The “W” stands or water and means that any water based cleansing agents only are safe to use. Some have the letter”S”, which stands for Solvent and indicates that a solvent based cleaner can be utilized. The third choice label is a combination (SW or WS) and pretty obviously means either water or solvent based cleansing agents are fine.

It goes without saying that a water based solution is a mixture of the cleaner plus some water. Follow the mixing instructions that come with the cleaner carefully to make sure you get the proportions right. Just wet a clean, lint free cloth in the cleaning solution, and then work it gently into the stain. You may have to repeat this several times until the stain disappears. If the stain has any odor, you can add a little vinegar or baking soda to the solution. It is however always advisable to use as little liquid as possible.

Solvent based cleaners, such as “Goo Gone” and “Dryel” are effective, but you must be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, and under no circumstances should you mix any two or more different products together.

But whatever you do, you must always use the very smallest amount of liquid cleaner that you can. If you use too much, you run the risk of letting mold get started which cold easily ruin your precious microfiber sofa. The other thing you should be aware of is that you should never spray or pour the cleaner directly on to your microfiber sofa. Always apply the cleaning solution on to the cleaning cloth first, and then apply if to the sofa. Always use a clean cloth, and always apply only by hand. By keeping your microfiber couch free from dirt in this way you will help to keep it looking good and it will be more of a pleasure to keep on using it.

There are a number of specialist carpet cleaning companies that also offer steam cleaning facilities for microfiber sofas. This is a fast and effective way of cleaning. It’s particularly effective when you have a lot of dirt and grime that has accumulated over a couple of years. The other thing that steam cleaning is great for is getting rid of those tell tale clean spots where you have cleaned a stain only to make the area stand out because it’s now cleaner than the rest of the microfiber sofa. Steam cleaning cleans the whole sofa, so it all comes up looking bright and new. It’s also a great way of getting rid of any unpleasant odors
